GREENWICH, Conn. — To help safeguard a patriotic display of American flags here from further vandalism, a local systems integrator has installed a surveillance camera free of charge.

Vandals have torn down the flags, bordering the Route 1 bridge over the Mianus River, three times in the past two months, reports Greenwichtime.com. Daniel Budinoff, president of Stamford, Conn.-based Security Specialists, took action after the assistant chief with the Cos Cob (Conn.) Volunteer Fire Co., which donated the flags and their holders, contacted him about video monitoring the bridge.

Arecont Vision donated a megapixel camera, valued at about $3,000, to the town. With the use of a bucket truck, the three-hour installation included mounting the camera atop a Department of Public Works facility, which is visible to all passersby.

Officials can view the live camera feed remotely via a laptop computer. All footage is saved locally to allow police to review the recordings when necessary.
