AUSTIN, Texas — Knight Security Systems has completed the first leg of its $12 million contract to install video surveillance cameras in 13 nursing facilities located throughout Texas.

The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services contract was awarded to the Austin-based integrator in January, reports the Austin Business Journal. The contract was developed after a U.S. Department of Justice report found that the state's 13 nursing facilities failed to protect residents from harm.

The entire project involves installing a network of more than 3,000 high-definition cameras and 35 miles of fiber cabling in 336 nursing buildings across Texas. Knight Security was given until August to complete the project. However, since it has completed installations in roughly 250 buildings, it expects to finish the venture six months in advance, according to the newspaper.

Founded in 1983, Knight Security integrates, designs and installs solutions for access control, video surveillance, intrusion and fire/life-safety systems for commercial and public sector clients.
