New Surveillance System Helps Calif. College Cut Down on Crime

MERCED, Calif. — In an effort to enhance the student and staff safety on campus, Merced College, located in central California, is deploying video surveillance system provider Avigilon’s high definition (HD) surveillance system.

The institution, which is monitored by campus security officers, installed Avigilon’s 5-megapixel, 11-megapixel and 16-megapixel cameras at both its Merced and Los Baños campuses. Officers manage the company’s HD surveillance system using its control center network video management software (NVMS) with HD stream management. Additionally, the college installed Avigilon analog video encoders to improve the performance of its existing analog cameras, which monitor the interior of several buildings.

Since deploying the system, Merced College has successfully investigated and resolved numerous cases of crime, vandalism and assaults. In one case, security officers caught a perpetrator in the act of stealing trim off several parked vehicles, leading to a successful conviction.

“The need to ensure student safety and campus asset protection has increased dramatically,” says Alexander Fernandes, president and CEO, Avigilon. “By incorporating the Avigilon HD surveillance system into its crime prevention strategy, Merced College has created a hybrid surveillance solution that cost-effectively helps to ensure campus security and delivers greater peace of mind to staff and students alike.”
