New N.Y. Comms System Won't Fix 9/11 Radio Failures

NEW YORK — The communications failures that plagued first responders during the 9/11 terrorist attacks would likely be repeated under a similar scenario, despite tens of millions being spent on equipment in lower Manhattan, reports the New York Post.

The Port Authority is working on a $130 million plan to hard-wire transmitters, antennas, and broadcast equipment into the building infrastructure that would allow emergency workers to communicate even if power fails during a potential attack.

Instead of installing a fully new system, the Port Authority is expanding the existing, antiquated system. In frustration, the NYPD has broken off talks with the Port Authority because the system isn't compatible with the agency's radios.
