San Francisco to Outfit Muni Buses With Security Cameras

August 10, 2011 | Comments (0) | Post a comment

SAN FRANCISCO — A $6 million federal Homeland Security grant will pay for the video surveillance upgrade for San Francisco's 358 Municipal Railway (Muni) buses.

Currently, the transit system uses a system that has been in place for more than 10 years and stores video footage on tapes within each vehicle. Operators must bring the tapes to an office to review recordings, reports the San Francisco Examiner.

The upgrade also includes the installation of wireless networks, computers and servers at three bus yards. As a result, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) personnel will be able to capture footage wirelessly and view it in real-time.

The SFMTA, which oversees Muni, expects the new system to help reduce vandalism and crimes.
