ESA Recognizes Children of Police Officers With Scholarship Program

IRVING, Texas — The Electronic Security Association (ESA) presented a sum of $10,000 in scholarship funds to two children of police officers through its annual Youth Scholarship Program.

Since 1996, ESA and its affiliated chartered chapters have donated more than $330,000 in scholarships to children of police officers and firefighters through the program. The association chooses the recipients based on a combination of academic achievement, national test scores, extracurricular participation and an essay competition.

“The men and women who serve this country each and every day as police officers or firefighters are heroes and national treasures,” ESA President Dom D’Ascoli says. “The work they do in protecting our communities can never be appreciated enough. This scholarship is one of the ways we can thank our deserving public safety partners.”

Emma Soneson of Higganaum, Conn., whose father is an officer for the Berlin Police Department, earned the first-place prize of $7,500. With a 4.28 GPA, Soneson qualified for the award through the Connecticut Alarm and System Integrator Association (CASIA), where she beat out dozens of applicants for the $1,000 first-place scholarship. Soneson will use the funds to study medicine at Yale University.

The second-place award winner, Courtney Keene of Tampa, Fla., took home a $2,500 scholarship. Keene, whose father is a deputy sheriff in Hillsborough County, has a 4.0 GPA. Because there is no ESA chapter in Keene’s area, she applied directly to ESA to win the preliminary round — including a $1,000 scholarship — in order to compete for the national scholarships. She plans to study engineering at Vanderbilt University.
