2008 ISC West: April 2-4, Las Vegas

Physical Security Plays Nicely on the Network at Top Installer Show
LAS VEGAS — A paradigm of the unstoppable shift to digital technology and IP-based solutions was on bountiful display at the 2008 ISC West in Las Vegas, held April 2-4 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center.

For all those not in attendance, ISC West delivered this truth: Analog and proprietary systems will continue to be the bedrock of countless security solutions for the foreseeable future, but the horizon clearly shines IP. And the ability to play nicely on the network is a gathering requisite for security contractors, manufacturers and end users alike.

IP video is, of course, taking a lead role in ushering in the adoption of networked systems. Among the vendors introducing network cameras at ISC West, Sony is staking part of its long-term growth strategy on a 1.3 megapixel format used in a ruggedized day/night mini-dome, a normal mini-dome and a day/night mount. The units are the first to offer “light funnel” technology, which combines image data gathered from multiple horizontally and vertically aligned pixels to provide bright images in challenging lighting conditions.

Among other vendors making a big digital splash at ISC West, Honeywell saw brisk action at its chunk of real estate on the show floor. The company’s Total Connect, a suite of services allowing consumers to stay connected to their homes and businesses via the Internet and portable devices, caught the interest of dealers seeking new streams of recurring monthly revenue (RMR).

Organizers say record crowds of more than 26,000 global participants attended the event. Although the show floor was noticeably thinner by the third day, many exhibitors told Security Sales & Integration they were thrilled with the number of motivated attendees.

“The show is incredible this year. There is a lot of buzz on the floor; we’re very pleased with the crowds coming in,” said Scott Schnell, president and CEO, VideoIQ Inc. Schnell had lots to be pleased about. VideoIQ’s first-of-its-kind iCVR (intelligent surveillance camera with video recording) won the Security Industry Association’s (SIA) New Product Showcase (NPS) Video Analytics award.
