Get Your Cabling in Line

Beam clamps — These devices take advantage of the clean continuous edge provided by structural beams. It is a unique and handy way to fasten cabling and conduit. One especially handy beam clamp comes from Solon, Ohio-based Erico.

Cable grippers — Working with many of the types of cable fasteners mentioned thus far involves several steps. There is another group of fastening devices that fall in between many of the categories we have discussed. They are prefabricated cable grippers that allow cable to be added and removed easily; similar to the bridle rings.

Again, Erico has its versatile CableGripper brand. I would also suggest you check out this company for many other combinations of devices mentioned in this column.

Powder actuated tools (PAT) — This is actually a cable support fastening method using 22-caliber explosives to drive fasteners in concrete and concrete block. This technique allows for considerable timesaving on mounting cables, conduit and equipment. Due to the danger of operating this device special safety training and certification is required for use on jobsites.

Tech Talk Tool Tip

I have always found the use of a staple gun for cabling a mixed blessing. While on the one hand I have used it on virtually every installation, on the other hand I always had the problem of where to put it when going up and down ladders. I can recall at one time taking my “universal tool,” a coat hanger, and making my own staple gun hanger for my belt, as I am sure many techs have similarly done.

Arrow Fasteners has come to the rescue with a device that can make every tech a true staple gun slinger. Thanks, Arrow, for the Gun Slinger product.
