Vector Security Helps Elderly Woman After Brazen Home Invasion
Here’s an industry-related random act of kindness I learned about the other day.
Amy Simpson, vice president and general manager of Vector Security’s Philadelphia operations, was watching a crime report on a local evening news broadcast recently that raised her ire.
In December, 94-year-old Madeleine Hope of Philadelphia was awakened by a female intruder who had her hands wrapped around the elderly woman’s neck and was threatening to kill her. The culprit, who entered through a window, was after cash. She eventually fled with Hope’s purse and $100, plus credit cards.
“The thing that really got to me is she’s alone. Madeleine has nobody else. The neighbors look out for her, but she has no other family. I just felt like something had to be done,” Simpson said.
The short of it is Simpson would soon meet with a man from Hope’s local neighborhood watch program to broach the idea of providing her with a security system and monitoring, gratis. The neighbor was leery at first, somewhat skeptical of the “free” aspect. After poring through a contract, the neighbor’s concerns were eased and he advised Hope to accept the alarm system, complete with an emergency response pendant for her to wear.
As Simpson explains, the brazen act perpetrated against Hope illustrates the safety and security threats that elderly people face each day — especially those who live alone and otherwise lead independent lives.
As it turns out, the local news station returned to Hope’s home to tape a follow-up story about Vector’s goodwill and services. You can view that news report here.
