Mississippi Senate Shoots Down Bill to Increase School Security
JACKSON, Miss.—A bill introduced on Feb. 10 by Rep. Joseph Warren was recently rejected by the Mississippi Senate. The bill would have sought methods for enhancing school safety throughout the state and would have created a grant program.
The proposed measures used to improve security on school campuses included the installation of metal detectors, CCTV, and communications and monitoring equipment.
This equipment would have been utilized in classrooms, school facilities and on buses. The bill was referred to the House Education and Appropriations Committees, where it passed on March 13. However, the proposed legislation went to the Senate on May 1, where it was killed in conference committee.
