New NFPA Prez to Be Introduced at Conference & Expo
The 2014 NFPA Conference & Expo will offer 150 education sessions, in addition to hands-on training and networking events.
The NFPA Conference & Expo will be held June 9-12 in Las Vegas. Among a roster of educational tracks will be a special focus on health-care facilities and sustainability.
LAS VEGAS – Fire/life-safety professionals from throughout North America will convene for the annual NFPA Conference & Expo in Las Vegas, held June 9-12 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
About 4,000 attendees – including architects, enforcement agencies, engineers, fire service personnel, installing contractors and other stakeholders – are expected to take part in the event’s industry-leading educational sessions, as well as learn about the latest technologies, newest research advances in life safety, and current building codes that affect the general public.
The 2014 conference will offer 150 education sessions, in addition to hands-on training and networking events. Concurrent tracks focus on building and life safety, codes and standards, detection and notification, emergency preparedness/business continuity, fire and emergency services, fire protection engineering, fire suppression, facility fire safety and security, electrical, loss prevention, public education and research. This year’s event will also offer special tracks that focus on healthcare facilities and sustainability.
Continuing education units (CEUs) will be awarded for many of the regular sessions. Upon completion, attendees will be awarded .1 CEU for a one-hour session, .2 CEUs for a two-hour session, and so on. Full participation in a session is required. The general session on June 9 will open with the Chair’s Remarks by Phillip Stittleburg, chair of NFPA Board of Directors, followed by the President’s Report by James Shannon. Shannon’s 12-year tenure as NFPA president and CEO will conclude when he passes the baton to his successor, Jim Pauley, during a special ceremony.

Pauley is senior vice president of external affairs and government relations for Schneider Electric. He has served in a number of codes and standards-related activities including chairman of the board for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), chairman of NFPA’s Standards Council and chair of the High Performance Building Council for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).

“This appointment ensures the continued pursuit of the critical mission of NFPA and positions the association to address the challenges of our times,” Stittleburg says. “Jim is an experienced leader and very knowledgeable on many of the issues important to NFPA.”
Rounding out the general session, best-selling author and historian Michael Beschloss will give a keynote address titled “Great Presidents, Past and Present.” Then from 3:30-7:30 p.m., event-goers can take part in the grand opening of the expo, along with a networking reception in the expo beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The exhibition hall will be open to attendees June 9-11. The expo will highlight more than 300 leading manufacturers and other providers exhibiting the latest products and services related to fire protection, building and life-safety systems, electrical systems and building design. Along with perusing vendor booths, attendees can find answers to code questions and interpretations, develop specs for a current project, as well as grow personal and professional contacts.
Throughout the event several exhibitors will be making presentations on the exhibit hall floor. These free presentations will cover a wide range of topics and best practices in the fire/life-safety arena. On June 11, Kurt Schwartz, who serves as director of the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, will present a special case study centering on the Boston Marathon bombing. Schwartz will review the local, regional and state planning process for the 2013 marathon and discuss the multidiscipline, multijurisdiction response to the bombings. The session will highlight planning challenges, lessons learned, and best practices of the response to and recovery from the attack.
The conference will conclude with the association’s technical meeting, which begin at 2 p.m. June 11 and continues through June 12.
