Why Video Verification Is Seeing More Success

Technology advances and crumbling costs are helping video verified alarms penetrate the security marketplace. Thanks to benefits that include better security and likelihood of apprehensions, as well as false alarm reduction, customers, law enforcement and insurers have taken notice. It all adds up to more recurring revenue.

Organization Champions Video Alarm Response

The Partnership for Priority Video Alarm Response (PPVAR) is a nonprofit corporation created specifically to promote video verified (VV) alarms and priority response. A key part of PPVAR’s message is to support continued response to traditional alarms with priority response used as an incentive to adopt VV.

PPVAR has board members from each of the primary stakeholders in the fight against property crime: the insurance industry, sheriffs, police and the alarm industry. Don Young, CIO of Protection 1, is currently president and Steve Walker of Stanley Security is vice president. Jacky Grim of Diebold is the chair of PPVAR’s education committee creating materials for the insurers to use to educate their agents and loss control professionals. There is also a VV committee tasked with working on “best practices” to be used in updated standards and education.

PPVAR is making significant progress with the insurers. The first insurance working group was held at this year’s ESX event where David Sexton, vice president of loss control at Jewelers Mutual Insurance, was on hand to work with PPVAR on VV alarms and develop materials to educate policyholders on the value of video alarms. PPVAR representatives met with State Farm underwriters and actuaries at its Bloomington, Ill., headquarters in July to discuss VV alarms and priority response for both residential and commercial applications.

PPVAR has no paid staff and 100% of dues collected go to fund promotion and education of PPVAR’s message. Full-page ads are being run in several national law enforcement publications as well as key insurance industry journals. For more information, visit ppvar.org. The site lists members and gives the bios of the various directors. It also provides a toolkit for alarm dealers to use as they work with local law enforcement on priority response.
