Look Broadly and You May Find New Opportunity to Sell High Def Video
At first glance the fiery picture to the left might provoke the science fiction buff in you. It’s actually an image captured by a megapixel camera at the Ellwood Group Inc. (EGI) metallurgic factory in Ellwood City, Pa. High definition video is being leveraged there to troubleshoot and solve manufacturing glitches that may arise. The video system is helping improve factory efficiency and productivity, resulting in cost savings for the factory and its customers.
The point in all this? The growing practice of leveraging HD images and IP-based networks for nonsecurity applications is on the rise, as well as explored in SSI’s July issue. As the article “Mega Uses for High Def Video” suggests, the plethora of applications for these systems is providing dealers and integrators with unique market niche opportunities.
For example, the integrator for the EGI project, Compass Network Services in Wexford, Pa., has helped the firm deploy more than 250 IQeye HD megapixel cameras at multiple facilities to monitor and improve manufacturing processes — both live and post-event.
EGI is a global provider of specially engineered forging steels, iron castings, forgings and other alloy parts used in everything from high performance bearings to nuclear submarines. A single product may cost tens of thousands of dollars. The criticality for the company to quickly solve a manufacturing problem is easy to see. But there are far less obvious examples of where HD video can be applied to realize newfound efficiencies and productivity.
