HID Global, Sony Release NFC-Enabled Contactless Smartcard Reader Platform
Supporting Sony’s FeliCa technology and HID’s iCLASS, iCLASS SE and MIFARE DESFire EV1 credentials, the platform stores cryptographic keys which secure the authenticity of user credentials. The solution also supports the industry-standard PC/SC Version 2.0 specification for the programming interfaces between PC applications, the operating system and smartcards.
The platform will also work with the proximity features of the Windows-based operating system. This will enable communication between NFC tags, mobile devices, phones and computers using a tap gesture, as well as the Android operating system for tablet products.
The business venture is an important milestone for Sony, according to Yoshihiko Kawakami, general manager of sales, Sony FeliCa Business Division.
“It moves our FeliCa contactless card technology and NFC solutions into the global market,” he says. “By releasing the new reader platform, we will play a role in providing a part of the NFC infrastructure in the global NFC era.”
Provided to the NFC Forum Certification Program, the reader will serve as a reference sample to validate the Digital Protocol test tools. The companies also plan to submit the platform for certification.
