Home Alarm Companies Top Consumer Complaint in Utah

Complaints come from sales persons from outside company pretending to be from existing alarm provider to replace current system.

Utah’s top consumer complaint is home alarm companies, according a Salt Lake Tribune report.

Adam Watson, chief investigator for the Utah Division of Consumer Protection, told a consumer protection conference on Thursday that home alarm companies topped the state’s list of consumer complaints. Coaching services fell down to No. 2 on the list, followed by retail sales.

The complaints of alarm companies stem from one company’s sales person pretending to represent a company that the customer has a preexisting contract with, according to Watson.

“They knock on the door and say they’re here to upgrade your alarm system,” he said. The sales person then proceeds to install their own equipment after tearing out the existing security system and getting the customer to sign a new contract.

Watson says the customers don’t realize what’s happened until their previous alarm company calls to report its equipment has stopped working, or until they see two separate alarm companies show up on their bills.
