ONVIF Developer’s Plug Fest Focuses on Profile Interoperability

CHICAGO — During ONVIF‘s sixth Developer’s Plug Fest, more than 20 manufacturers tested their company’s implementation of the organization’s Profile S specification.

More than 50 engineers spent 257 hours testing nearly 30 devices at the event, which was hosted at security products distributor Anixter’s Chicago offices in early March. More than half of the tested devices were prototypes that align with Profile S, the first in a series of profiles released by ONVIF that simplifies the selection process of compatible devices.

Profile S describes common functionalities shared by conformant video management systems and devices, such as IP cameras or encoders that send, configure, request or control the streaming of media data over an IP network.

The plug fest, ONVIF’s second largest event to date, is beneficial for member companies, according to ONVIF Technical Services Committee Taskforce Chairman Takahiro Iwasaki.

“Our developer’s plug fests are an ideal opportunity for member companies to verify their ONVIF interoperability with many other manufacturers’ technology at one time, in a highly technical and open setting,” he says. “This recent event provided a very timely opportunity for testing of devices that align with Profile S prior to those being released to the market.”

ONVIF’s next plug fest will take place in Asia in September.

Axis Communications, Bosch Security Systems and Sony Corp started ONVIF in 2008. The group’s goal is to ease the integration of network security products with a global standard. It currently has more than 360 member companies and more than 1,600 ONVIF-compliant products on the market.
