Treasure Island Casino Upgrades to Networked Surveillance System

LAS VEGAS — Led by the design and installation services of Surveillance Systems Integration (SSI), Treasure Island Hotel & Casino (TI) recently completed a comprehensive upgrade of its analog VCR and matrix system with a Pelco Endura 2.0 video management system (VMS).

During a 10-month-long, multiphase project, SSI deployed the new VMS, which comprises digital recording and a virtual matrix to monitor and record up to 1,400 channels of video throughout the property.

Among newfound capabilities, recording from all cameras will be retained for a minimum of seven days. The project also included upgrades to the facility’s existing surveillance and security observation rooms with new operator consoles and video walls. The Pelco VMS allows security operators to control cameras, call up video and perform live tracking of people and events much like the traditional matrix, but without the additional space needed to house traditional matrix hardware.

“We were the only integrator that detailed a firm plan and strategy that increased both the security and surveillance department’s workspace and placed them on the cutting edge of the latest in security technology,” says SSI President Todd Flowers.

The scalable solution allows the casino to phase out other existing analog cameras for IP-based, high definition cameras.

“TI has the first and only fully functional virtual matrix switch on the Las Vegas strip,” SSI Business Development Manager Rick Phan says. “We wanted Treasure Island to stand above the competition. They have made a significant investment in the Pelco system that will meet their needs for years to come, including the switch to high definition megapixel cameras.”

The systems integrator won the project after it provided a firm plan and strategy to increase the security and surveillance department’s workspace, TI Director of Surveillance Kim Smith says.

“TI faced some very unique challenges for system upgrades,” he says. “Bill Young, SSI’s project manager, offered a detailed plan of how they could combine existing resources while still providing a world class system that would meet our needs today and in the future.”

However, the project was not without its challenges. SSI could not go over the firm budget that TI allocated to complete the project. Yet, the integrator completed the job within budget, without any additional costs or change orders, according to Smith.

“We handed SSI a very difficult set of circumstances as well as budget requests,” he says. “To our surprise, they not only met each challenge, but SSI exceeded expectations in their design, budget and use of the latest technology. We know this investment will last for years to come.”

Established in 2002, the Roseville, Calif.-based SSI offers surveillance integration for casino, commercial and retail markets. Designing and installing comprehensive security solutions for its clients, SSI also provides consultation and advanced project management.
