Tri-Ed Takes the ALS ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’

Members of the wholesale distributor’s senior management team and several hundreds of employees raise $5,000 for the charitable effort.

WOODBURY, N.Y. – Count Tri-Ed employees and a few executives among the legions of participants in the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge” social phenomenon.

On Aug. 14, Tri-Ed’s senior management team challenged all 600 of its employees to join in the effort to raise awareness and money in the battle against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The terms? If they raised $2,500 by the end of the day, Tri-Ed President and CEO Pat Comunale would take the challenge the next day. Tri-Ed staffers hit the goal in only two hours, prompting Tri-Ed CMO James Rothstein to up the ante. If they hit $3,500 he would also take the challenge. That goal was also quickly hit, so the stakes were raised again.

If employees could raise $5,000, Paul Swan, Tri-Ed’s vice president of sales and marketing/Canada, and Mike Culbertson, VP of Tri-Ed’s technical sales group, would also endure a bucket cold water and ice. Tri-Ed employees, both in the corporate office and branch staff, hit the goal on Aug. 15 and collectively have contributed a $5,000 check to the ALS Association.

Donations to the ALS Association, a Washington-based nonprofit that funds global research to find treatments and a cure for the disease, have surged since the challenge started trending in late July. The group said Aug. 21 that it had received more than $41 million in donations from July 29 until Aug. 21.
