Winter Springs (Fla.) to Add Video Surveillance With Grant Money

Cameras will supplement security measures at various city facilities.

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. – Located about 15 miles north of Orlando, city facilities here will be outfitted with video surveillance cameras purchased with grant money to improve security at various locations.

The Winter Springs Police Department will enhance security using about $84,000 in grant money for cameras and training, including new surveillance at City Hall, Central Winds Park and water plants, according to the Seminole Chronicle. The new security cameras will hopefully be in place within 30 to 60 days, according to the police chief.

Mayor Charles Lacey said that the police department received a Homeland Security grant from the federal government several months ago, and the money being used for these security improvements is all federal dollars, the newspaper reports.

“There’s a lot of misunderstanding by people that this is somehow a general surveillance program, and it gets the civil libertarians justifiably concerned about the deployment of it,” Lacey said. “It’s not looking out on the roadways or public parks or any public facilities watching citizens as they go through their daily business. It’s only looking over the water treatment plants and the public facilities that are owned by the city and under our guardianship.

Brunelle listed some reasons why he is looking forward to the completion of this project.

“[We’ll] be able to monitor those areas within the city that we feel need to be monitored on a 24-hour basis,” he said. “We’ve had some vandalism around [here] and of course with all the stuff going on around the world and in the country with work-based violence – and also with thefts of different types of materials – we want to use these cameras as the deterrent for any crime that may be committed against our water plants or anything like that.”

On May 12 at the city council meeting, it was confirmed that Infinity AV and Security, Veytec and Epic Engineering & Consulting Group are the vendors that will be providing the necessary equipment and training, according to the newspaper. Not only will the vendors be receiving part of the grant money, but contingency will be given an allotted amount in the budget as well. Infinity AV Security promises a one-year warranty and offers video surveillance systems along with engineers for installment purposes.

Lacey said that it was just a matter of when WSPD received funds from a grant that determined when the security was to be increased in the city.
