Systems Integrator Study – Light at the End of the Economic Tunnel

Numbers are often what you make of them. And in these recessional times when most business news is as encouraging as the Pittsburgh Pirates’ pennant hopes, it may be more productive to dig beneath the surface to mine data for hidden gems. While reporting only good news would be irresponsible and an injustice to company owners and operators, SSI’s fifth annual Systems Integrator Study manages to pluck several diamonds out of the rough.

For example, the majority of integrators experienced increased business in 2008 and anticipate only a slight downturn for 2009; video surveillance continues to be in high demand, particularly IP-related products, systems and services; more companies are now offering intrusion systems; public sector projects such as those involving hospitals, schools and universities are hot; and employees of integration firms averaged 7-percent higher wages in 2008. Plus most respondents report a high level of job satisfaction.

Nearly 300 leading security system integration companies participated in the in-depth electronically administered survey, which consisted of more than 60 questions and was conducted by Bobit Business Media Research. In a first, SSI partnered with PSA Security Network, the largest organization of security integrators, to solicit respondents. To qualify, operators had to identify their business model as one primarily based on system design, installation and service sales as opposed to recurring monitoring revenue.

The 2009 edition of the Systems Integrator Study takes into account the critical agents of change reshaping today’s integration business with the introduction of several new questions specifically focusing on areas such as the economy and IP video. This original research continues to serve as the leading barometer of the state of the industry and an indispensable strategic resource for forward-thinking integrators.
