Newly Installed ESA President John Knox Sets Early Goals for 2-Year Term

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — During the Electronic Security Expo (ESX), the Electronic Security Association (ESA) installed John Knox as the association’s president for 2012-2014.

As owner and president of Knoxville, Tenn.-based Life & Property Security Systems, Knox has served as an ESA executive board member since 2006. During his term, one of Knox’s goals includes reaching out to smaller companies to help them connect to ESA.

“I think a lot of the smaller companies think they can’t make a difference because of their size,” he said. “I want to work with them and show them that they really can make a difference, especially at the local level. I also understand larger companies, and the kind of things they need to take away from their membership. But if we can somehow motivate the smaller companies, it’ll grow the association.”

Knox also hopes to stop the industry associations, such as the Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) and the Security Industry Association (SIA), from the inefficiency of overlapping efforts to solve industry challenges, he told SSI inlast month’s “Hot Seat.”

“We have to look at more of who is going to take a lead in what so we don’t have different people working on the same things at the same time. There is way too much duplication in what the three organizations are doing,” he said. “We need to agree to focus more on what we’re about individually and use that to work together as a group.”

During the June 28 installment ceremony, ESA announced four newly elected officers. Hollywood, Fla.-based Devcon Security’s Roy Pollack will serve a one-year term as vice president. Marshall Marinace of Yorktown, N.Y.-based Marshall Alarm Systems and Robert Michel of Sun Valley, Calif.-based Valley Alarm will serve two-year terms as vice president. ADT’s Bill Cooper was re-elected as ESA’s secretary.

ADT’s Jon Sargent was also elected to a two-year term as national company representative, while Ken Nelson was elected to a two-year term as an associate member representative.

The new terms officially began on July 1, 2012. Charles A. “Dom” D’Ascoli will continue to serve on the executive committee for two years as immediate past president.

Knox praised D’Ascoli for his leadership in a challenging business environment.

“In my opinion, over the past couple of years, Dom has been the orchestrator of the greatest amount of change that the association has ever gone through,” Knox says.
