South Carolina Town Adds Video Surveillance to New Park

Officials in Irmo, S.C. have approved installing a 52-camera surveillance system in Community Park to deter crime.

IRMO, S.C. – Officials here have agreed to add security cameras in the city’s new 14-acre park in an effort to deter crime.

City officials are planning to spend $89,000 for a lease with a Statewide Security Systems to install a network of 52 cameras and monitor events at Community Park, which opened last November, for five years, The State reports.

The cameras will be concentrated on the entrances of the park, as well as its playground, picnic shelters, amphitheater and other areas where visitors congregate.

Some residents opposed installing the cameras, stating that it was too costly and impractical.

However, others noted that the cameras give police a new way of identifying anyone responsible for a crime.
