Tyco Expands Security Global Center of Excellence

Tyco Integrated Security unveiled its new expanded Global Center of Excellence in Alabama.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tyco Int’l celebrated the grand opening of its expanded Global Center of Excellence (GCoE) with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday.

SSI was present during the ceremony and had the opportunity to tour the 24,000-square-foot facility, which will be used to support the firm’s global enterprise customers, Tyco Int’l CEO George Oliver explained.

“There was a multitude of capabilities that were part of the commercial security business within North America, and when we launched the new company [following split with ADT] a good part of the strategy was how to leverage it,” he said. So we are standardizing how we do work across the globe. [GCoE] is where we not only have the technical expertise, but then the project management, the execution and how we are going to service them over their lifetime.”

The center will be used to develop standards, technical specifications and detailed work plans that enable consistent security installations globally, while also providing customers with remote system audit services to verify functionality and compliance to corporate standards.

The increasing number of global clients prompted Tyco to expand the GCoE as the firm outgrew its old facility, Tyco Integrated Security President Mark VanDover said. Now, the new GCoE will allow Tyco to better serve clients with a single point of contact for their global security needs.

“Customers are seeing the value we offer through this effort, and they are increasingly seeking out the services and solutions we provide through a center such as this,” VanDover explained. “It’s about presale, helping define the customer’s needs, working with what is the right solution set, having the right project management onsite for the installation to make sure all goes as the customer wants it, and then having some kind of solutions that ensure the customer sites work as they need it to down the road. Regardless of where they are in the world, where their different locations may be for a single enterprise customer, they are going to get the same solution and the same delivery method, and that is really the strength of what we are offering here.”

The firm plans to adopt GCoE’s approach throughout the business, with fire and security being the first priority. Company executives believe that the business plan will differentiate Tyco throughout the world and allow it to execute in a more consistent fashion, Oliver said.

Tyco decided to open its new center, which houses 90 employees, based on local talent that the firm has been able to recruit. To work at the facility, all employees must have a four-year engineering degree, at the minimum, since workers are responsible for designing and documenting global security standards for enterprise-level intrusion security, access control, video management, fire systems and integration.

Additionally, the facility’s diverse team has multiple competencies, including fluency in 14 languages, and is well-versed in the business and cultural nuances required to successfully conduct business in the 38 countries the center supports, so customer standards and technical specifications can be maintained and updated as needed.

“Establishing this Global Center of Excellence is another step in the communication we have had around the new Tyco’s three top priorities: accelerated growth, continuing to do bolt-on acquisitions, and creating an operating company that really leverages our talent across the globe. I think this represents a model of that and how we are building the new Tyco moving forward,” Oliver said.
