Nortek Launches Smart Device-Based Credential Management Ecosystem

Nortek’s Linear BluePass removes reliance on keyfobs by letting end users utilize Bluetooth-enabled smartphones as a credential for their existing access control system.

CARLSBAD, Calif. — Nortek Security & Control (NSC) announces it is now shipping the new Linear BluePass, a credential management ecosystem that combines smart device-based electronic credentials with the BluePass mobile credential management Cloud and a multi-technology Bluetooth/125 kHz proximity reader.

The BluePass ecosystem features NSC’s patent-pending Credential-To-Go cards, representing a physical token that acts like a one-time-use mobile credential credit card, according to the company.

Each Credential-to-Go card unlocks between 5 and 100 mobile credentials in a dealer’s BluePass Cloud account.

Using the BluePass Cloud service, dealers and admins can quickly assign the credentials to users, who use it to activate the BluePass app on their smartphone. Once activated, the app communicates with the BluePass multi-tech reader installed at the point of entry.

To simplify transitions from legacy card or fob systems, NSC says the BluePass multi-tech reader is compatible with popular 26 to 37-bit 125kHz cards and fobs and mounts easily in both single-gang and mullion-mount configurations.

“The new Linear BluePass mobile credential ecosystem provides an easier-to-deploy and more secure approach to access credentials. Reverse-compatible with most 26 to 37-bit Wiegand-based access control systems, it saves costs and the significant time investment that typically prevents customers from upgrading their systems, while giving end-users a simple smart-phone based credential that eliminates the need to carry a fob or card,” says NSC vice president of integrated systems John LaFond.

The BluePass solution provides for a lower cost of deployment, as an invitation is sent to the end-users’ e-mail to download the app and their credentials, saving shipping costs, handling and time compared to physical cards/fobs, according to the company.

Dealers can also manage their customers’ credentials or delegate authority to specific customers who wish to manage and issue their own purchased credentials.

“With multiple credential credits packaged in cards that are redeemable on the BluePass Cloud, distributors are now able to quickly support dealers with BLE credentials sales with each reader sold,” LaFond says. “Allowing distribution to easily stock and sell through just like a standard card or fob, BluePass takes electronic credentials ‘mainstream,’ allowing for widespread adoption of the technology.”
