Venerable Gun Maker Enters Electronic Security Industry

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Smith & Wesson Corp., the 156-year old gun manufacturer, has reached an exclusive licensing agreement with NationWide Digital Monitoring Co. Inc., to design and market Smith & Wesson-branded security systems.

NationWide, the wholesale monitoring division of New York Merchants Protective Co. Inc., will develop an authorized Smith & Wesson Security Services network that will be marketed to select dealers beginning in October. Dealers will have access to both hardwired and wireless OEM alarm products branded with the Smith & Wesson name and logo, along with dedicated monitoring services. The product line will also include an entry-level video surveillance system.

The company is targeting independent dealers who have been in business for at least five years, NationWide’s Eric Wahrsager, vice president of marketing and development, tells SECURITY SALES & INTEGRATION.

“We want alarm companies who are looking to market but keep their accounts, a company that needs a marketing edge,” Wahrsager says. “Plus, they will have the ability to do national accounts because they can do it under the Smith & Wesson name and pass the service or installation off to one of their brethren in the program.”

The dealer program will be officially introduced at the Electronic Security Expo (ESX), held June 26-27 in Nashville, Tenn. NationWide will first deploy the program in six southern states where the Smith & Wesson brand enjoys its broadest recognition, Wahrsager says.
