Attempted Rape Stopped Thanks to Security Camera, Police Say

Police were able to respond to the scene of the alleged attack before a 15-year-old male student could complete his attack on a female student at a Md. high school.

SALISBURY, Md. — Some people might question why our society continues to see more and more video surveillance systems pop up. A story out of a high school here shows just how beneficial the surveillance can be.

An alleged rape attempt at James M. Bennett High School was stopped thanks to security cameras located inside the school. Police say a 15-year-old male student was taken into custody before he could rape the student, Delmarva Now reports.

Police saw the events unfold on the video feed: The female student was led by the alleged attacker into a back stairwell when he started to kiss the female student. The victim fought to hold off the male student for 10 minutes before police arrived on the scene to stop the alleged attack.

It is the second sexual assault reported in a Wicomico County public school in the past two years, according to the report, with the first occurring in October 2014.

While some critics of the rise in video surveillance might bring up privacy concerns, stories like these show how the technology is used to protect people and fight against crime.
