Amazon Partners With Kwikset, Yale for In-Home Delivery Service

The Amazon Key solution also includes a DIY security camera. Could Amazon soon further move into the DIY home security space?

SEATTLE — Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) has teamed with Kwikset and Yale to offer smart locks from each company to users of its new in-home delivery service, Amazon Key.

Amazon Key is available exclusively to Prime members and allows for the delivery-person to enter a customer’s house to drop off their package.

In order to use the service, customers must buy the Amazon Key In-Home Kit, which comes with an Amazon Cloud Cam Key Edition and choice of smart lock from either Kwikset or Yale.

Two compatible locks will be available from Kwikset, including the Kwikset Convert, a smart lock conversion kit, and the SmartCode 914, a touchpad smart lock.

Customers can also choose the Yale Assure Lock Touchscreen,  a keyed electronic deadbolt.

Amazon Key also lets you “schedule permanent access for your family members or give temporary access to recurring visitors like dog walkers, house cleaners, or out-of-town guests,” according to the company.

Amazon as a Security Company?

As mentioned above, the Amazon Key In-Home Kit includes the company’s new DIY security camera, the Cloud Cam.

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Amazon is starting to get into the security game. The company got people’s hopes up earlier this year when images of a camera powered by Alexa leaked. However, that camera turned out to be fashion-focused.

An Alexa-powered security camera is sure to interest Amazon customers that already own one of the company’s ever-expanding lineup of Echo devices.

However, one thing customers should be aware of is that Amazon Key does not integrate with home security systems. So if you plan on using it, you’ll have to deactivate your security system whenever a delivery or visitor arrives.

This latest announcement comes on the heels of multiple new DIY security systems that are now available or soon will be. Get up to speed on them by checking out the links below:
