5 Security Stars Join Hall’s Galaxy of Greats

Selfless leaders of two of the most respected family run installation and monitoring companies, a legal crusader for the security industry and its businesses, a pioneering alarm company owner and co-founder of the principal trade association, and an executive unsurpassed in boosting national providers’ fortunes are elected to SSI‘s Hall of Fame for lifetime achievement. Their stories elicit admiration, awe and inspiration.

High achievers are typically too busy strategizing, accomplishing goals and planning their next moves to spend much time looking back, promoting themselves or fully realizing or appreciating the totality and significance of their endeavors. Instead it’s often their actions and results that tell the story and speak most loudly. And while that holds true for five particular individuals who have each performed at the peak of their abilities for decades, the security industry has spoken up for them to send them into the SECURITY SALES & INTEGRATION Hall of Fame. In alphabetical order and matching the sequence of quotes on the opposite page from voting committee members, 2013’s Hall of Fame class is: Mike Duffy, John Jennings, Alan Pepper, Morris Weinstock and Tim Whall.

Founded in 2004 to represent the highest honor for extraordinary professionalism, conduct and achievement, each year SSI’s Hall of Fame pays tribute to those remarkable people who have had an unforgettable impact on the industry, continuously sustained over the duration of a long and illustrious career. Honorees are recognized in an official induction ceremony held during the SAMMY Awards on the eve of ISC West (April 9) at the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas.

With selections a little more homogeneous than in past years, four of the honorees are associated with the installing and monitoring sides of the electronic security business. The fifth is a law expert. In all cases, however, it is more about how each helped and cared about those around them and contributed to the industry than pursuing personal or bottom-line glory.

They are leaders who treated everyone like extended members of their family run companies (Duffy and Jennings); a former alarm company manager who used insider knowledge to protect the industry’s operators from legal threats and help them better safeguard customers (Pepper); the co-founder of a trailblazing company and the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association, and whose family name is to this industry what Kennedy is to politics (Weinstock); and an officer of national providers who always put employees and customers first (Whall).

Nominated by past inductees and other luminaries, these five now join more than 60 others in the industry’s pantheon. The following profiles — much of them in the subjects’ own words — encapsulate how each one of them met challenges head-on and enriched themselves, those with whom they have associated, and the industry at large. SSI is delighted to officially welcome these pivotal and praiseworthy members of the security community into the Hall of Fame.
