First Alert Dealers Hear Message on How to Seize the Future

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Honeywell’s First Alert Professional Security Systems convention by way of official theme urged more than 850 attendees to ponder a single question: “Are You Ready?”

The networking/education/entertainment extravaganza, held Nov. 8-11 at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Ariz., was designed to focus dealers on technology and demographic evolutions that are expected to drastically transform the alarm and monitoring industry.

As detailed by Ron Rothman, president of Honeywell Security and Custom Electronics, during the grand opening session, among the forces creating the upheaval are the AMPS sunset and new generations of users who will demand services that utilize the Internet and mobile devices to stay connected to their homes and businesses. Throughout the event, during educational sessions and other forums, Honeywell executives pointed to the company’s new Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) products as examples of what First Alert dealers can rely on for building and securing their businesses for the future.

The inevitable migration away from land lines, in part, threatens to put any dealer out of business who cannot or is unwilling to prepare to sell to technologically-savvy consumers, Rothman admonished.

For those who are ready, opportunity abounds to offer new products and services and to increase recurring monthly revenue (RMR), he says.

To make his case, Rothman says disruptions in the market caused by voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), the migration away from POTS and the growth of digital radio networks will ultimately necessitate the replacement of more than 20 million alarm systems. “This kind of opportunity will happen once in a lifetime,” he says.
