IT Industry Leaders See Access Control Boosting Use of RFID

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – A market research company serving the IT industry sees a huge spike in growth ahead for RFID (radio frequency identification) technology and gives much of the credit to security and access control. Evans Data Corp., in its Wireless Development Survey released in April, says it expects RFID applications to rise by 450 percent in the next year and a further 96 percent in 2006.

In the survey of 450 wireless developers, 36 percent expected to deploy RFID technology within the next two years. Of those using RFID, three out of every 10 planned to use it for security and access control – more than any other application.

“We’re living in a more security-conscious world and people are looking for anything that can make it more efficient. RFID is a good thing toward that,” Evans Data wireless analyst Jason Kaczor says.
