Nortek Security, Core Brands Strike Merger Agreement to Form NSC

Nortek's Carlsbad, Calif. headquarters, which currently houses 2GIG and other Nortek Security & Control units, will be control central for the new NSC, which adds Core Brands companies to the mix.

CARLSBAD, Calif. — Nortek Security & Control (NSC) and Core Brands have merged into one integrated group to be headed by current NSC President Mike O’Neal. Comprised of leading brands in security, home automation and audio/video, focused mainly on professional installation channels, the new company will be named NSC.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Based in Carlsbad, Calif., NSC remains dedicated to developing and manufacturing the smart home, security, access control, entertainment and personal digital health solutions that make the connected home and business a practical reality for more homeowners and business operators than ever before, according to the company.

Anchored by the 2GIG security and Elan home-control platforms, the new NSC will offer installation partners an expanded range of integrated solutions across all of its interconnected products. In addition to 2GIG, NSC brands include Linear, GoControl, Mighty Mule and Numera.  The company touts more than 4 million connected security systems and more than 20 million security and control sensors deployed.

In addition to Elan, Core Brands includes SpeakerCraft, Gefen, Niles, Panamax, Proficient, Furman, Sunfire and Xantech. The two companies were previously part of Nortek, which sold the companies to Melrose Industries in 2016 for $2.8 billion. The merger enables the Nortek Security & Control brands to eliminate the awkwardness of retaining the name of its former owners.

Core Brands president Joe Roberts assumes responsibility for driving product vision across the new NSC company as executive vice president of marketing and innovation.

“The market is demanding a broader range of solutions that work better together across product categories, and this is a major focus of our innovation,” Roberts says. “In particular, our 2GIG and Elan integration creates opportunities that perfectly address the connected smart home market and the evolving needs of our customers.”

O’Neal says, “The combination of NSC and Core Brands helps us serve our customers with an unparalleled suite of solutions for the residential and commercial control, security, entertainment, access and personal wellness markets. Joe Roberts and I share a strong commitment to our customers, which will guide the innovation we develop into our products, services and programs.”

The company will highlight its latest connected smart home, security and personal wellness solutions at CES 2018 in Las Vegas, Booth 40921, in the Sands Expo Center.
