i-PRO Enacts Global Standards to Ensure Responsible AI Development and Compliance
Company launched its AI Ethics Committee in June to oversee the newly introduced AI ethics review process.
TOKYO – Video protection and public safety solutions provider i-PRO Co., Ltd. (formerly Panasonic Security) just announced the establishment of “a comprehensive AI governance framework” that “aims to ensure the responsible research, development and utilization of AI technologies.
Building on the Ethical Principles for AI published by i-PRO in December 2023, the company has taken further steps by launching the i-PRO AI Ethics Committee in June. The committee is tasked with overseeing the newly introduced AI ethics review process, which “will be integral to the development lifecycle of AI products,” according to the company announcement.
In addition, i-PRO plans to introduce AI ethics training for employees, with the program set to begin in October 2024.
i-PRO’s Focus on Responsible AI
i-PRO “has been at the forefront of AI research and development for many years, delivering cutting-edge sensing solutions that utilize edge AI technology in the security, public safety and medical fields,” according to the company announcement.
CEO Masato Nakao emphasized the company’s commitment to ethical artificial intelligence, stating, “i-PRO recognizes the significant impact of AI on society. By establishing an AI governance structure ahead of others in the industry, we are taking proactive steps to ensure that our AI initiatives align with our social responsibilities.
“Our goal is not only to advance AI technologies but also to lead by example in ethical AI practices,” he says. “In addition, we will cooperate with industry peers, partners, and customers to foster a culture of responsible AI development and utilization, positioning i-PRO as the industry leader in AI ethics.”
ISO/IEC 42001, an international standard for AI management systems, was issued in December 2023, and the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, a comprehensive regulation for AI, was approved in May 2024.
i-PRO is “actively addressing these standards and regulations to realize its vision to ‘always create new value contributing to the safety and security of society’ through responsible research, development, and utilization of AI,” the company announcement says.
