Security Canada Central Conference and Exposition: Oct. 18-19, Toronto

The Canadian Alarm and Security Association (CANASA) outdid itself this year with its annual Security Canada Central Conference and Exposition at the Toronto Congress Centre in Toronto Oct. 18-19. Some 2,000 security professionals attended the event, which featured the latest in security products, contacts within the Canadian security industry and the presentation of the 2000 Dealer’s Choice Awards.

Although this trade show has seen steady growth the past few years, its full potential has finally begun to be realized with the 2000 installment. The exceptionally well-planned event benefited from a smartly configured show floor and several large, elaborate displays. Organizers were ecstatic, as the show was busy both days. For the first time, foot traffic was such that people often had to wait to get into booths and exhibitors and attendees alike commented that the second day was busier than usual.

Digital Security Controls (DSC), Tri-Ed, SG Wireless Communications, Ademco, X-10 Pro, Philips and Safety Technology Intl. (STI) were among the exhibiting companies with an especially strong presence at the show. Those vendors and others displayed their wares to serious-minded security professionals, primarily drawn from northeastern Canada and the eastern and Midwest regions of the United States.

CANASA’s 3rd annual Dealer’s Choice Awards were held during a champagne reception at the beginning of show, on Wednesday, Oct. 18. The program recognized a selection of the industry’s best new products in six categories—Access Control, Fire, Burglary, CCTV, Specialty Products and Home Automation. “The Dealer’s Choice Awards program continues to provide significant value to our show and is an ideal platform to recognize new technology,” says Jeffrey MacLean, CANASA executive director.

As usual, Tri-Ed’s lavish party on the evening of Oct. 18 topped the after-hours happenings. In addition, many people went to the original Second City in Toronto, which was filled with colorful moose sculptures (much like the cows in New York), for improvisational comedy entertainment. Those who were able to extend their stays capitalized on unusually mild weather, with temperatures in the 70s, and beautiful blue skies by traveling through the scenic wine country between Jordan and Niagara before taking in world-famous Niagara Falls. U.S. visitors also enjoyed added value for their dollar as the exchange rate pumped up stateside currency by approximately one-third.

In short, the new CANASA regime is doing a banner job and dealers would be well advised to add the Security Canada Central Conference and Exposition to their trade show travel schedule for 2001.
