SIA Course Instructs Integrators How to Win Grants for Security Projects

The e-learning course for security professionals is comprised of three modules that cover essential aspects of the federal grants life cycle.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Security Industry Association (SIA) has launched what it bills as the first-ever industry training program designed to help security businesses take advantage of government funding opportunities.

Being able to navigate the federal grants landscape is an opportunity for installing security contractors to provide added value to end customers. However, pursuing federal grant funding requires skillful planning and time-sensitive execution. SIA’s new Federal Grants Certificate Program will help security providers identify applicable grant programs, complete application forms, manage grant awards, as well as ensure compliance with program requirements.

“SIA recognizes the essentialness of federal grant funding for our members and the clients they serve. To help them leverage these available opportunities, we saw a need for additional education on how to get started and effectively manage the various program requirements,” says Dr. Elli Voorhees, director of learning and development, SIA. “We believe this new assessment-based certificate program will position our members for success and help them to gain financial support for their projects.”

The self-paced e-learning course includes three modules:

Grants 101: In this module, you’ll learn grant essentials like funding mechanisms, terminology, common application elements and federal grant opportunities. Gain insights on preplanning and application development, as well as post-award obligations and reporting requirements.

Vertical Market Grant Programs: This module provides an overview of where to find agency logic models and how to tie to them. It will specifically focus on applicable grant programs in education, transportation and critical infrastructure sectors as identified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Writing Winning Grant Proposals: This hybrid module covers key program elements, budgets and timelines and offers participants the opportunity to consult with a professional grant writing firm to discuss and receive feedback on their grant proposals.

Each interactive module includes a participant workbook with templates, outlines and exercises to reinforce key learning objectives and aid in on-the-job planning for grant applications. SIA will also offer special rates for additional one-on-one consulting time with an experienced grant-writing professional. For additional details and to register, go here.
