SSI’s ISC/ASIS Top 30: Editors Storm Shows, Hail the Best

Despite the Gulf Coast being gripped by the worst hurricane season on record, more than 8,000 dedicated security professionals made their way to ISC East in New York Aug. 24-25, while another 19,000+ took in the ASIS Int’l Expo in Orlando, Fla., Sept. 12-15. Those who braved the elements were rewarded with more than 1,100 combined booths showcasing the industry’s latest state-of-the-art technology.

However, even if you are the most stalwart security practitioner, you could no more than scratch the surface of the massive array of offerings presented at these two events. Unless, of course, you knew a way to systematically get through each and every exhibit in just over two minutes apiece (1,150 booths divided into 40 hours, or 2,400 minutes, of show floor time, excluding lunches or bathroom breaks). Granted, there was some overlap of both attendees and exhibitors at these shows, and not every exhibit was applicable to every visitor.

Nevertheless, sorting through and making sense of such an onslaught of products can be intimidating. In addition, despite those lofty attendance figures, only a fraction of the security universe makes it to these events. If only there were some way the process could be simplified and made easier for both those who attend and those who do not to know which products they should not overlook. Good news — there is!

Security Sales & Integration Technical Editor Al Colombo and Technical Writer Bob Dolph tirelessly fanned out across the show-floor aisles — forsaking their aching backs and throbbing feet — to glean which products stood out the most from amid the exhibition glut. Much to the chagrin of their chiropractors and podiatrists, these savvy security technology gurus brushed aside all the hype to uncover the diamonds in the rough to be included in this year’s SSI ISC East/ASIS Top 30 Product Picks.

Even then, there were far more noteworthy items than could be contained within a mere 30 leading products. That’s why Al and Bob spent the ensuing weeks sorting and reviewing their notes, press materials and spec sheets to distill it all down to a tidy 15 devices apiece. These are the ones they believe offer the greatest opportunities to installing dealers and systems integrators.
