Moreno Valley, Calif., Boosts Fines for False Robbery Response
MORENO VALLEY, Calif.—The Moreno Valley City Council voted on Nov. 9, 1999 to increase the fine for merchants whose employees press robbery hold-up buttons when there is not robbery occurring.
The fine increased from $25 to $100. The city council hopes the increase will encourage merchants to properly train their employees on when to use an alarm, as well as how to conduct proper maintenance of their alarm systems.
Robbery calls in the city receive a higher priority response signal than burglaries. Officers are commonly rerouted to respond to robbery signals. Along with the fine boost, the police department has added two part-time positions to hear appeals from merchants and process citations.
