NBFAA Salutes Smith, Didden; Westphals Wait in Wings

LAS VEGAS – One of the most important social events held during the week of ISC West was the annual Alarm Industry Research and Educational Foundation (AIREF) Gala and awards presentation. This year, the fundraiser, which is sponsored by the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA), was held March 25 at the Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino.

Former California Alarm Association (CAA) President Tony Smith, president of Security Finance Associates in Pasadena, Calif., was named winner of the Sara E. Jackson Award, which is presented to a NBFAA committee chairperson who has done an excellent job in that capacity.

“I am humbled by the thought of all those who have received it [the award] before me and the exemplary leadership they have given the NBFAA,” Smith, who chairs the NBFAA Communications Committee, told the audience.

NBFAA Immediate past President Bart Didden, president of USA Central Station Alarm in Port Chester, N.Y., was named winner of the Morris F. Weinstock Award, which is presented to a person for his or her outstanding overall contributions to the industry during the preceding year.

“The NBFAA presidency, as well as all of my industry association work, have provided me with the foundation to grow as an individual, a team player and a leader,” says Didden. “I could never repay the industry for the personal gains that I have made during my years of involvement.”

The following morning, at ISC’s Industry Summit, it was announced that brothers Roger and Bruce Westphal of Bay Alarm in Walnut Creek, Calif., would be honored in December as co-winners of the George A. Weinstock Award, which is presented in recognition of lifetime achievement during the CAA’s Winter Conference in San Francisco.
