Without a good working environment and the right tools, it is not possible to do a good job. Imagine coming to work and not having the tools necessary to do your job. Well, that’s what was happening at Kelly Paper, a distributor of office supplies in Los Angeles, Calif. The truck drivers had trucks with no tires.

Thieves had cut through the fence, dodged the security system beams and made off with tens of thousands of dollars worth of tires.

Setting up 45 zones in 150 man-hours, The Greater Alarm Co. improved upon an already existing system, while lowering costs and creating a safer and more convenient environment for the people who work at Kelly Paper.

Techs Fix Problems Before Starting New Job

There already was an alarm system in both the truck yard, and the warehouse and office.

Being able to tell exactly where the beams were enabled the thieves to walk right into the yard without tripping the alarm.

The perpetrators were also setting off the alarm on purpose to see where they could and could not go.

16 Zones Are Dedicated to Protecting the Yard

When Steve Smith of the Greater Alarm Co. and two other installers went to secure the truck yard, they wanted to provide beams that hid the direction in which they pointed.

In addition to securing the perimeter of the truck yard, Smith thought it necessary to include beams that crisscrossed the yard.

The diagonal beams run 200 feet to 250 feet. MK350 photoelectric beams were used because of their 350-foot outdoor rating. In all, a total of seven sets, or stacks, of beams were used and there are 16 zones. More can still fit inside each tower, but because of Kelly Paper’s budget, only the seven stacks are being utilized.

Getting Power to Beams Troubles Technicians

Since the beams out in the yard are so far away from any power source, Smith was worried Originally the conduit was PVC that was actually attached to the fence itself. This was easy to get at, making disabling the alarm system simple.

Redesigning System Puts a Stop to Falses

Kelly Paper was also having trouble with false alarms. The falses were being caused by birds and trash in the yard. This problem was solved by using beams with an interrupt time.

Technicians Revise Interior Security

The Greater Alarm Co. technicians thought it wise to make a few changes on the inside of the warehouse and office. Work on the interior of Kelly Paper was mainly the manipulating of the keypad.

Install Takes Four Months to Complete

The Greater Alarm Co. began the project in November 1997 and finished in February 1998. It took 150 man-hours to complete the project.

Break-Ins Cease After Install

Since The Greater Alarm Co. installed and upgraded Kelly Paper’s alarm system, they havn’t experienced any more break-ins.
