Chicago Suburb Adopts NFPA Safety Codes
QUINCY, Mass.
The North Maine Fire Protection District located northwest of Chicago has adopted new fire codes from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The district serves approximately 30,000 suburban residents in unincorporated Cook County in Maine Township.
The NFPA’s 2003 editions of the Uniform Fire Code and the Life Safety Code and the 2002 editions of the National Fire Alarm Code and the Standard for Installation of Sprinkler Systems are included as part of the district’s Fire Prevention Codes. The district also references a chapter of NFPA 5000, Building Construction and Safety Code.
“The safety of our citizens is our biggest priority, and we feel that these codes are the best choice to ensure that safety,” said Arnold Witzke, fire marshal of the North Maine Fire Protection District, in a statement. “NFPA codes are the most comprehensive available, and the newly adopted codes will do the most to protect our community.”
The Uniform Fire Code provides requirements necessary to establish a reasonable level of fire safety and property protection from hazards created by fire and explosion. Used in all 50 states, the NFPA’s Life Safety Code mandates building design construction, operation and maintenance requirements to protect occupants from the dangers caused by fire, smoke and toxic fumes.
The other NFPA documents adopted by the district regulate equipment used for fire prevention as a whole. These codes became effective Aug. 19.
