ESA Updates Requirements for Popular NTS Certifications

The changes are said to allow for National Training School certifications to meet the evolving requirements of many states and make them more valuable for industry professionals.

IRVING, Texas — The Electronic Security Association (ESA) has updated requirements for obtaining its most popular National Training School (NTS) certifications.

These include the Certified Alarm Technician Level II (CAT II), Certified Fire Alarm Technician Level II (CFAT) and Certified Fire Alarm Designer (CFAD) Level III.

The changes allow for certifications to meet the evolving requirements of many states and make them more valuable for industry professionals, according to an announcement.

While the specific training and experience requirements for earning the CAT II and CFAT certifications remain unchanged — students are still required to complete the same prescribed classwork and provide proof of 24 months of industry experience — the updated applications for certification have been revised to include components for verifying work history and field competency.

While the prescribed CFAD  coursework has not changed for obtaining this certification, all candidates must now show proof of 60 months of experience and pass a comprehensive exam after successfully completing all courses.

The updated application for this certification has been revised to include components for verifying work history, field competency and now includes a personal recommendation form, which must be completed by a professional who is familiar with the professionalism, ethical standards and technical abilities of the applicant.

ESA’s NTS certification programs are based on rigorous curriculum and real-world experience to ensure all certification holders meet a level of excellence in their fields. Because certification holders are recognized experts, ESA states, they are often sought out for leadership positions and employers can feel confident that work by these professionals will be executed in an exceptional manner, compliant with industry codes and standards.
