NBFAA Proclaims November ‘False Alarm Prevention Month’; Asks for Pledges
SILVER SPRING, Md.—In an effort to get dealers involved in false dispatch reduction, the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA) has declared November False Dispatch Prevention Month. According to the Model States Report, false dispatches decrease when alarm dealers proactively address the issue. NBFAA has initiated a multifaceted plan to educate alarm dealers, and to provide substantial information on methods for reducing false alarms. The plan includes the False Alarm Network (FAN), which is comprised of a group of dealers and manufacturers across the United States that work with NBFAA to educate dealers on false alarm prevention, and act as the eyes and ears of the industry with regard to the enactment of alarm ordinances.
The topic of the month is prepared and distributed to FAN and state leaders for dissemination to alarm dealers in the form of an electronic newsletter, which is designed to educate the industry on practical false alarm reduction topics. Much like the False Alarm Reduction Summits that have educated greater than 950 law enforcement officials, the dealer workshops are short presentations that explain the new control panel standard, while educating dealers on how they can take responsibility for their contribution to the false alarm problem.
NBFAA has also instituted a Dealer Pledge program. Following are the three key steps dealers vow to support when they sign the pledge:
1. Attempt to verify alarms prior to any police dispatch.
2. Install systems with SIA Control Panel False Alarm
Reduction features left in the default mode.
3. Commit to not placing a system in service until each
user is adequately trained.
The pledges will be shared with law enforcement officials in their area as well as among their peers. All dealers are encouraged to sign the pledge sheet on page 28, and fax it back to NBFAA at (301) 585-1866. Dealer support is needed and encouraged, so get involved today! To learn more about the Dealer Outreach Program, or False Alarm Prevention Month, contact Jennifer Gehring, NBFAA director of government relations, at (301) 585-1855, ext. 109, or [email protected].
