Undeniably, in a free society there is no such thing as 100% security, as has been demonstrated time and again. This also continues to underscore the criticality of our industry and work. We must always remain vigilant.
With this in mind, there’s a proliferation of proven security methodologies used by private, public and governmental agencies that can help protect the United States, its citizens and its assets. In addition, there are theories of liability that are commonly alleged by plaintiffs to hold others responsible in both civil and criminal actions.

The methodologies come from authoritative documents such as the Protection of Assets Manual (POA), which is published by ASIS Int’l. Keep in mind, some of the duties of industry practitioners are to be able to identify and quantify risk; determine, what if any, impact occurs positively and/or negatively if there is only “desire and ability” coming from the perpetrator(s) during a crime; how all elements of the “crime triangle” influence successful acts of crime; and what, if anything, a security practitioner can do to break the crime triangle to help minimize risk.
