We continue our National Security Technician Day Q&A series with Alan Terrazas, lead technician at Preferred Technologies. He shares his path in the security industry, why he loves his work and a memorable installation.

Security Sales & Integration: How did you get into the security industry?

Alan Terrazas: I was working for a company that handled Lenovo warranty repairs. After some time, the work became repetitive and I realized I wanted to do something more hands-on and challenging. A coworker mentioned Preferred Technologies and shared the type of security work being done here. After the interview, I could immediately see the growth opportunities compared to where I was before.

SSI: What’s your favorite part of being a security technician?

Terrazas: Troubleshooting is my favorite of the job. Even though it can be stressful at times especially because it can be something you have done hundreds of times and one situation throws a curveball its rewarding when you figure out the issue and get everything working properly.

I also enjoy being able to share that experience and knowledge with others to improve their troubleshooting skills.

SSI: What’s one installation that made you particularly proud?

Terrazas: One installation, or should I say project, that stands out to me was working on ARFF 92 at Bush Airport because it was one of the projects I had the opportunity to work on from start to finish. The project included integrating a vehicle gate loop, intercoms, readers and a master station so everything functioned together seamlessly.

There was a lot of terminating, troubleshooting and fine-tuning involved but seeing the gate open successfully from the pedestal with the readers and master phone working as intended, was a very satisfying accomplishment.
