Our Best Advice Q&A series continues with Bob LaDouceur, chief operating officer and co-founder of CSP Consultants Group. He highlights the best advice he’s ever gotten, gives tips to security industry newcomers and names the person to whom all others in the sector should always listen.

Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Bob LaDouceur: One piece of advice that’s stayed with me throughout my career is to never stop improving your process. No matter how successful a project is, there’s always something you can do better the next time.

In construction and technology integration, consistency is everything. The companies that succeed over the long term aren’t necessarily the ones with the newest technology, they’re the ones that communicate well, solve problems early and deliver a predictable experience every time.

I’ve learned to treat every project as an opportunity to refine how we work, because better processes lead to better outcomes for clients and stronger teams.

SSI: What advice would you give to those looking to achieve success in the security industry?

LaDouceur: Master communication before you master technology.

The technical side of the industry is always evolving. You’ll learn new platforms, new products and new systems throughout your career. What doesn’t change is the need to communicate clearly with clients, contractors, architects, IT teams and everyone else involved in a project.

The most successful professionals I’ve worked with are proactive. They respond quickly, ask questions early and aren’t afraid to raise concerns before they become problems. In our business, delays are rarely caused by the technology itself, they happen because people aren’t aligned.

If you become someone others can rely on for clear communication and accountability, you’ll build a reputation that lasts much longer than expertise with any particular product.

SSI: If you could point to one person in the security industry and tell up-and-comers, “Make sure to listen to what they have to say,” whom would you pick and why?

LaDouceur: Rather than point to one individual, I’d encourage people to listen to professionals who have spent years delivering successful projects in the field, not just talking about technology but solving real-world challenges.

The security industry is changing quickly with cloud platforms, AI-enabled analytics and greater integration across building systems. The people worth following are the ones who can explain how those technologies actually improve project delivery, operations and the end-user experience instead of simply promoting the latest product.

The best mentors I’ve had focus on fundamentals: understand the client’s objectives, design solutions that fit the application rather than the trend, communicate consistently and never stop improving your process. Those lessons will remain valuable no matter how much the technology changes.
