The Best Advice Q&A series keeps chugging along with Carla Manzanilla, program manager at Allied Universal. She shares the best advice she’s ever gotten, gives pointers to young security industry pros and singles out the person to whom all others in the security industry should always listen.
Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Carla Manzanilla: The best piece of advice I’ve ever received was from my husband many years ago: care deeply about your work but never lose sight of the importance of work-life balance. It’s something I carry with me every day.
In today’s world, it’s easy to get completely wrapped up in building a career and constantly pushing for the next step. While ambition is important, remembering who you’re working so hard for is what truly matters. For me, success is not just about professional growth; it’s also about being present for the moments that matter most with family and loved ones.
I believe that mindset is a big reason our team works so well together. We genuinely support one another and understand the importance of balance. We’re willing to step in for each other so no one has to miss a recital, a basketball game or an important family moment because those are the moments you can never get back.
SSI: What advice would you give to those looking to achieve success in the security industry?
Manzanilla: My advice to anyone looking to achieve success in the security industry: know that you belong. Be confident in the fact that you are there for a reason and that your voice, perspective and contributions matter.
When I started in this industry many years ago, there were very few — if any — women sitting at the table. For a long time, I was one of a few female project managers in an industry that was heavily dominated by men. Learning to trust my abilities and remind myself that I belonged in those rooms made all the difference in my career and personal growth.
The industry has evolved tremendously since then and I’m incredibly proud of the team we have built — one that values balance, diversity and representation at many different levels. Seeing more women step into leadership and technical roles has been incredibly rewarding and is something I’m truly proud to be part of.
No matter where you are in your career, believe in your value, know your worth and never underestimate the impact you can have. Confidence, resilience and authenticity will take you farther than you realize.
SSI: If you could point to one person in the security industry and tell up-and-comers, “Make sure to listen to what they have to say,” whom would you pick and why?
Manzanilla: I would point back to my good friend Tia Eskandari. Tia joined our team many years ago, coming from a completely different industry, and has advanced into a national leadership position at an unbelievable pace. She has a brilliant mind, leads with kindness and has an incredible ability to inspire and elevate the people around her.
Tia has also been a strong advocate and mentor for others. She pushed me to pursue my PMP certification and has played a huge role in bringing incredible women into our team who are now growing and advancing at a rapid pace themselves. She is a great example of what strong leadership, determination and genuine support for others can accomplish.
