Our Best Advice Q&A series continues with Kevin Engelhardt, president of North America for SSI’s 2025 Installer of the Year, Securitas Technology. He offers up the best advice he’s ever gotten, shares advice he’d give to those looking to make their way up the security industry ranks and shares the inspiration in his career.

Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Kevin Engelhardt: The best advice I’ve ever received is to lead with consistency and thoughtfulness—even when time is short and resources are limited. In our industry, it’s easy to get caught up in the urgency of the day-to-day, but taking a moment to think strategically, to communicate clearly and to act with integrity makes all the difference.

Thought leadership isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about being willing to share what you know, listen to others and help move the conversation forward. That mindset has shaped how I approach every challenge.”

SSI: What advice would you give to those looking to achieve success in the security industry?

Engelhardt: Success in security starts with showing up—being visible, vocal and valuable. This industry runs on trust, vigilance and service. Whether you’re in operations, sales or supporting other critical client touchpoints, your ability to communicate and collaborate sets you apart.

But presence alone isn’t enough. In today’s fast-moving landscape, data must guide our decisions. It helps us navigate complexity, align teams and act with confidence. By combining visibility with data-driven strategy, we build organizations that are agile, resilient and ready for what’s next. Stay curious. Stay committed. Add value—through your presence and your insights.

SSI: If you could point to one person in the security industry and tell up-and-comers, “Make sure to listen to what they have to say,” whom would you pick and why?

Engelhardt: Leadership in the security industry isn’t about following one voice; it’s about listening to many. The most impactful leaders lead with humility, experience and a desire to elevate others. They earn trust through action, adapt with purpose and challenge us to grow.

As we grow, so should our mentors. Remember that leadership isn’t a fixed destination; it’s a continuous journey shaped by evolving roles, fresh perspectives and the people we meet along the way. Staying open to diverse voices helps us adapt, learn and lead with greater purpose. It’s not about following one path; it’s about embracing change and striving to become the next best version of yourself.
