In today’s Best Advice Q&A, we hear from Kevin Stone, chief operating officer at Doyle Security Systems and chairman of the Electronic Security Association board of directors. He shares the best advice he’s ever gotten, offers tips for upcoming security industry pros and names the person who inspires his career journey most.
Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Kevin Stone: Early on, a good friend taught me that maintaining a strong family-self-work balance is critical to finding success. Balance reduces stress and prevents burnout, resulting in emotional well-being.
Setting clear boundaries and identifying when things are out of balance is a learned behavior. If successful, it fosters stronger, more fulfilling relationships with family, friends, co-workers and industry peers. In addition, a balanced life directly impacts happiness, benefiting both personal longevity and organizational success.
SSI: What advice would you give to those looking to achieve success in the security industry?
Stone: The fundamental goal of the security and life safety industry is about protecting life, property and critical infrastructure from fires, criminal acts and disasters. These services foster public trust and peace of mind, allowing individuals to live, work and interact in their communities without fear.
For me, there’s a “greater good” aspect to what we do. My advice is to never lose the understanding that what we do makes a difference. It’s that belief that has kept me in this industry for almost four decades.
SSI: If you could point to one person in the security industry and tell up-and-comers, “Make sure to listen to what they have to say,” whom would you pick and why?
Stone: Okay, if I must name one, it’s John Doyle. I was fortunate to report to a person that I have admired for 30 years. He leads by example and has many qualities and characteristics that I have learned from and attempted to emulate. John has a visionary mindset that inspires and empowers teams, he’s an active listener, a clear communicator and no one has more integrity.
I’ll add that so many individuals have impacted my life and career. My advice would be to join and actively participate in industry associations and conferences. Surround yourself with people willing to share their wisdom and experiences. The industry is full of individuals that will help you find success. Go make it happen.
