ISC West: What You Need to Know for the Show

The preeminent tradeshow for installing and monitoring security providers, ISC West is back for another round in Las Vegas. To help attendees prepare for this exciting event, SSI offers a concise overview of what individuals can expect from this year’s show.

Focusing on School Security

With the recent massacre at a Newton, Conn., elementary school that left 26 dead, the issue of school security has been at the top of everyone’s minds. To address the matter, SIA Education @ ISC will launch its new School Safety Series, as well as a special course in the Learning Labs track, which will focus on K-12 and higher education campus security.

Held on April 9, 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Bob Cullum, vice president of Dugmore & Duncan, and Rodney Weaver, training specialist for ASSA ABLOY Door Security Solutions, will host “From School Lockdowns to Quiet Auditoriums: The Proven Benefits of Electric Latch Retraction.” During the hands-on learning lab, participants will examine opportunities for providing electric latch retraction at schools, hospitals and various other settings. Students will also install a motor kit into a mechanical exit device, make wire connections and power on for operation.

The following day, show organizers will unveil the School Safety Series, divided into four sessions that discuss how technologies, such as Near Field Communication (NFC) and IP video can keep students, staff and campuses safe. Courses include: “The Future of Crime Prevention: Stopping Crime in Remote Areas of Campus,” “NFC on Campus: Using Smart Phones as Campus Credentials,” “Critical Incidents in Higher Education: The Case for an Intelligent Response,” and “60 Sites, 50 Miles and 5 Key Lessons Learned: How One School District Made the Move to IP Video Surveillance.”

Connecting Socially at the Show

As more organizations realize that the best way to reach people is through social media, Reed Exhibitions will launch “Live With ISC,” a series of short interviews with attendees and exhibitors. Social networking at its finest, this new program will allow all in attendance to share their thoughts on the current and future sta
te of the security space. Video will be posted on the ISC West Web site and on Twitter (@iscevents).

Attendees can also learn about the latest developments from the show floor with SSI’s new Social eLert newsletter. For up-to-the-minute updates, be sure to follow us on Twitter (@SSIMagazine), Facebook and LinkedIn.
