IRVINE, Calif. — An increase in manpower and capability is behind the move by security monitoring firm Westec InterActive to acquire three companies. Video monitoring hardware manufacturer DV Dallas, digital video online application developer d2 Digital Designs and security integrator Sparta Consulting Group were acquired in multiple deals announced Oct. 12. Terms were not disclosed.

DV Dallas manufactures hardware that helps provide video monitoring for commercial clients, while also manufacturing fixed and mobile DVR systems. Sister company d2 Digital Designs, also based in Dallas, specializes in providing online portals for digital video, training and other applications.

“We’re trying to build intelligence and awareness and connectivity. Now is a time for our customer to focus exclusively on the fact we have more intelligence and do more things,” says Westec CEO Gerald Vento. “We think of our smart services as going beyond the technical upgrade and refresh programs. We’re building intelligence into the product.”

A big part of the acquisitions for Westec will be in how it more than doubles its workforce. Vento says Westec will be able to service customers more specifically to their function. “If it’s a fast-food outlet, it goes to one group. A jewelry chain goes to another group of people. This is why I invested this year in more redundancy,” Vento says.

Sparta specializes in providing integrated security solutions for high-risk environments such as housing developments, government and manufacturing facilities. It also has proprietary monitoring technologies that will be folded into Westec’s monitoring operations.

“Sparta’s interesting because it had high-risk environments,” Vento says. “Westec’s expertise has been in specialty retail.”
