The Physical Security Interoperability Alliance (PSIA), which recently released its IP Media Device Application Programming Interface (API), says the specification is quickly gaining the attention of the industry’s leading companies involved in networked security and surveillance systems.
The document was officially unveiled at the ASIS conference in Atlanta and has already had more than 100 companies register to receive the standard.
“We anticipated a strong response from the professional security industry as the demand for networked systems continues to grow at a rapid pace,” says PSIA Executive Director David Bunzel. “Companies offering networked solutions expressed strong interest in working with the PSIA to support standards that will further accelerate interoperability and seamless compatibility across a diverse range of applications, including building management, access control, storage and voice over IP.”
The specification is the first revision recommended by the PSIA, an open-membership organization created to promote the interoperability of IP-enabled security devices.
The scope of this initial API specification is centered on IP-enabled video surveillance devices, such as IP cameras, encoders and DVRs. It enables physical security and video management systems to recognize and change the configurations of various IP media devices and control their behaviors. It also eliminates the need for device driver customization in order to achieve interoperability among products from different manufacturers.
Tom Cashman, general manager of GE Security’s video products, says the specification has the potential to simplify integration, reduce costs for companies developing products and facilitate faster growth in the security industry.
